Indraprastha Apollo Hospital has become the first Indian hospital to be cleared for accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI), which is the gold standard for US and European hospitals. The accreditation certificate is expected at the end of the month. Hospitals in India are now seeking international accreditation because it assures patients that best practices and standards are followed in a safe environment. Apart from reassuring patients about the standard of treatment, international certification such as this one will help hospitals in India attract more foreign patients. With 50 million Americans without health insurance and the waiting lists for state-run facilities often endless in the UK, Canada and Europe, foreigners are increasingly flocking to India because it offers quality treatment at a fifth of the cost abroad.
